Spain has got the first female Formula One driver, Maria de Villota, the 32 year old daughter of the former Formula One driver, Emilio de Villota. She had been hoping to test drive for Lotus, but has obtained a place in the Marussia team, previously known as Virgin. She said she was very happy to be joining the Marussia F1 team test driver program, describing it as a fantastic opportunity to work closely with a Formula One team and gain experience for her career. She will be testing their new car later in the year at Abu Dhabi. She has also taken part in Spanish F3, the Daytona 24 hour race and comes from the Superleague Formula. Formula One continues to be male-dominated with just five women drivers having entered a Grand Prix, and only two of those actually qualified and started a race. Italian driver Lella Lombardi actually drive in 17 races and Desiré Wilson from South Africa is the only woman ever to have won a race, at Brands Hatch in the British Aurora F1 series in 1980.
