Following the arrest and later fine last year of a Jordanian air force official for carving his name onto a wall in the Alhambra, another tourist has been arrested for defacing Spain’s most visited monument. A tourist from Switzerland was caught last Saturday afternoon using her fingernails to carve a heart with initials at either side into a wall of the Comares Palace. Despite being warned by security guards at the monument, she continued until her engraving was finished. She was then arrested by the National Police. The woman spent a night in police cells before a judge released her with charges of damaging heritage property. It’s understood that her actions are considered serious not because of the superficial damage she caused, but because of the site she chose for the engraving. It’s not yet known if she will be charged with a crime or with an offence.
